an author love letter to D.Rose

BGWW Quarter 4’s Black Author Spotlight is Author D. Rose. I chose D. Rose because she was one of the firsts, Black indie authors, I was introduced to. Not only is she from my hometown, but her work reminds me of cocoa butter, hot chocolate, and Darius Lovehall from Love Jones reciting Brother to the Night (A Blues for Nina) on repeat.

D.Rose is a personal favorite of mine. Hailing from the DMV, she drops the hometown culture throughout her novels. The first book I read by D.Rose was Cherie Amour. I continued to fall down a D.Rose novel rabbit hole and I’ve been hooked ever since. The one series that I truly love the most is the For Keeps series. This series includes three books: Because of Love, The Sweetest Love, and On Love’s Time

D. Rose knows how to craft a love story that either makes you want to fall in love if you’re single or fall in love again with your significant other. The way she constructs the characters in this series not only shows friendship but love through real-life journeys. In Because of Love, we have a couple who have two completely different career paths: a rapper and an aspiring doctor. In The Sweetest Love, we have best friends who become lovers. The final book (for now) in the series is On Love’s Time, we have two lost souls who make their way back to each other.

All three books have a piece of my heart, but I want to focus on the characters from On Love’s Time, Gwen and Puma.

These two characters were a little complex, but only with each other. However, they were easy to connect to. Gwen was trying to find herself through a troubling relationship that she knew went past its expiration date and Puma, a man of his word and a man who knows what he wants and doesn’t play any games.

Can I have me a Lorenzo ‘Puma’ Morris in real life? Asking for a friend. Lmao.

But these two people knew what it was like to build a core relationship from the ground up. They started off as friends, which helped them turn into solid lovers.

I don’t want to give too much away, but when Puma shows up, he shows up and doesn’t hold back. Gwen, sis, you are a lucky woman.

Read the For Keeps series. I don’t like book spoilers or reviews that tell you every finite detail about a book, but I will say this, if you don’t read this series you're missing out. This series makes me want to fall in love every day with somebody’s son (Puma👀). Lol. D.Rose, I would love to have another book added to the For Keeps series, but I understand if you’ve run out of characters. Lmao.

A few more favorite books from D.Rose: Brown Sugar, Warmth, Love’s Language, and The Vow.

Honestly, you can’t go wrong with choosing a book from her full catalog at all.

xoxo,
